Those of us who were not so fortunate as to be born into money have to work for a living. Sometimes, while working, we will be asked to do things we would rather not do, whether it be physical labor or an act with which we have moral dilemmas. Similarly, work is a place to get things done, rather than to socialize or take a break. Doing so may get one reprimanded or fired. So can you balance your health and sanity with your progress at work without getting into trouble?

Take a Break

Every hour, half-hour, or otherwise, stand up and take a few deep breaths. Let your mind and body refresh – hit the reset button on your body. Think of it as a cleansing, relaxing period to allow more work to get done in the near future. This is your time.

If you get into trouble for this, try doing it in the bathroom, or walk a memo or something similar to another person’s office on the other side of the building. Be ready to explain that you need to refresh your mind or your work will suffer. Any good boss will understand, and any bad boss will be too afraid to lose another employee.

Leave it at Work

Leave work where work belongs. Do not take a work computer home to finish a project overnight. Just as it is not okay to take your children in for a visit, it is similarly wrong to make your family or personal space suffer because of an unproductive day. Home is where you recharge – not where you catch up.

Talk to Others

As coworkers, you share common bonds with many of the people around you. You both experience the same things day after day, although probably with a different perception. Learn who your coworkers are and be sure to keep yourself active throughout the day. Nobody else will be around to provide moral support should it be needed, so work friends are very necessary. Be careful not to do too much talking.

Little Reminders

Stick a post-it into your lunchbox, or your monitor, or your door, so every time you see it, you’re reminded to smile, or think of God, or remember why you’re working. Little reminders throughout the day can make the difference between misery and cheer.

How do you keep your life on-track and balanced at work? Do any of the tenets of your life suffer while you’re away from home?

“The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The second best time is now.” – Chinese Proverb

People regularly make excuses for why they cannot and will not do something that needs to be done. Crossing items off the to-do list becomes infinitely more complicated than it actually is when one simply does not want to do something, but cannot admit that to oneself.

Particularly susceptible to the curse of excuses are long-term goals – ones that will take weeks, months, or even years of dedication and steady effort. Learning a second language, getting into shape, and mastering balance are hard to complete and even harder to begin. Such is where the quote above comes in: true, it would be wonderful to have finished something by now. But the best alternative, and what we will focus on in this article, is to take a step toward completing your goal right now.

This quote makes many uncomfortable for a simple reason: it forces you to conjure into mind images of what should already be begun and over. It brings into sight great regrets that are overwhelming. I wish I would have tried harder in high school and that I had been working on getting into shape ages ago. I want a scholarship and a body which suits my strong will and tough mind. Indeed, we all have a goal we should have began working on ages ago that has no end in sight presently.

But perhaps one day, there will be an end in sight. Perhaps we will meet that goal. Would you prefer to meet that goal in a year or a year and a day? Begin today. Go do a couple crunches. Stop eating junk food now. Say no to slacking off and do something for money so you can start saving for retirement. Do it now. You will be much better off in the long run.

The main goal of this blog is to teach small business owners working from home and college students alike the art of living balanced lives. Personally, I define living balanced as being happy with progress and continuing personal growth without limiting or becoming obsessed with professional growth.

A balanced person is automatically a true Renaissance man or woman: art, history, literature, science, and mathematics are an important part of life on a daily basis, though not necessarily in traditional forms. Balancing a checkbook counts as math, for example, and reading the news will suffice for historic value.

Balance is less affected by what you do and more by how you do it. A balanced person knows the secret of all things in moderation and can tell you anything you want to know, both tactfully and honestly.

A balanced person is miles closer to Enlightenment, Nirvana, or Heaven, or whatever you wish to call it, than all others, because he or she knows where to look while we stumble around confused and misguided.

And that is why I strive every day to live a balanced life. With balance comes fulfillment. With fulfillment comes happiness. With happiness comes progress. With progress comes inspiration. And, finally, with inspiration comes balance.
